Services Provided By Waccamaw Youth Center

**WYC OPERATES WITH A POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT PROGRAM**

"Discipline should not be punishment but rather helping a child learn self-discipline....a lifelong tool."   -Zimmy Zimberg

Independent living skills are provided to teach our residents the life skills necessary to become productive, contributing members of society.  Examples include employment, money management, time management, admission/discharge planning, and the development of daily individual and group living skills.

Mental Health counseling is provided on site.  Counseling issues are determined by client needs, DSS treatment goals, and court orders.  Individual, group, and/or family counseling is provided by our residential counselor.

Educational Services are provided through educational advocacy, academic tutoring, and involvement in after school programs such as clubs and sports.  The Center also encourages growth beyond high school; going on to college, trade school, or other programs that will provide residents with skills for their future.

Social/Recreational fulfillment is one of the most important aspects of a child's life.  Recreational activities at the Center are both organized and undertaken at the residents' own choice.  Our sports field features a basketball court and volleyball court.  Currently, our multi-purpose field is under construction and when completed will serve as a football, baseball, and soccer field.  Resources for bike riding, weight training, and boxing are also available on site.  Less physical entertainment may take the form of time in our computer center, reading, playing pool, video game tournaments, or watching approved rental movies.  Involvement in extra-curricular activities is also encouraged as a practical means for our residents to build additional skills.

Spiritual Fulfillment is encouraged through optional attendance at local church services and church related programs and events.  The Center also actively assists and rewards the efforts of residents who elect to serve the community through volunteer programs and special projects.

Room and Board as an integral but subordinate part of the service is provided.  Each resident is assigned to a room sleeping 2-3 boys.  The house is equipped with a shared living room, dinning room, kitchen, and recreational/computer center.

Family Contacts/ Visitations are permitted but must be pre-approved before on-site visits are allowed.  Family contact varies depending on individual residents.  Court orders, DSS treatment plans and WYC program guidelines all play a role in determining the frequency, length and amount of supervision a family receives.
